A last-minute trip in an electric car? How to use booking platforms to make sure you can always set off fully charged
Travelling by electric car today means planning not only your destination and accommodation, but also the availability of charging points that are reliable, compatible and ideally accessible directly at the place where you are staying. To meet this growing need, many hotel booking platforms have started to include specific filters for the presence of EV charging points.
The level of detail, accuracy and usability of the information varies considerably from site to site, so we have put together an overview of the main booking tools available.
Here are the sites and platforms that mean you need never worry about finding no charging point on holiday
Booking.com: EV charging available, but best on desktop
Booking.com is one of the general platforms that have introduced a dedicated filter for electric car charging, called “Electric Vehicle Charging Station”.
The filter is available in the “Facilities” section and is mainly accessible from the desktop version of the site. In the mobile version or app, however, the feature is not always active or visible. Once applied, the filter lets you select properties that declare they have a charging point, but it rarely specifies the connector type, the power available or the cost of charging, if any.
Expedia and Hotels.com: a simple but effective filter
Expedia and its sister platform Hotels.com also offer a similar option. The “Electric car charging station” filter appears among the available amenities and lets you narrow your selection to hotels offering the service.
Here too, however, the information provided stops at a generic indication of availability: neither the power nor the connector type is specified.
Airbnb: suitable for those looking for private homes with a charging point
The Airbnb platform has introduced the “EV charger” option among its amenity search filters. The feature is especially useful for those looking for private accommodation, such as holiday homes or self-contained flats, with charging stations.
Bear in mind, however, that in most cases these are residential wallboxes, often not compatible with all power levels or with vehicles requiring standards other than Type 2. It is advisable to contact the owner directly for confirmation.
TripAdvisor and Kayak: filter available, limited information
TripAdvisor lets you apply a filter to select properties with EV charging, but the quality and completeness of the information vary from listing to listing.
The same applies to Kayak, which includes the EV filter among the available amenities but without going into detail about the technical specifications or how to access the charger. Both platforms can be useful for an initial selection, but require further checks.
eViaggio: the Italian portal for electric mobility
For those travelling in Italy, eViaggio is a dedicated resource. It is a free platform that collects and catalogues hotels, restaurants, B&Bs, agriturismi and campsites offering EV charging points. Unlike the big general portals, eViaggio lets you filter by connector type (Type 2, CCS, CHAdeMO, etc.), power (kW), free or paid charging, and also by location or type of venue. Listings are often verified and accompanied by reviews from EV users, which makes the service particularly useful for discerning travellers.
Information is available, but often still not very detailed
The availability of charging points at hotels has become an important criterion for people travelling electric, but not all booking platforms provide sufficiently detailed information.
Booking, Expedia, Airbnb, Kayak and TripAdvisor offer a useful first filter, but it is often necessary to supplement your search with specialist tools such as eViaggio, Stay-N-Charge or PlugShare. To avoid surprises, it is always advisable to contact the property directly and, if possible, also book access to the charging point.
